Why are logos so important to a business and do we really need one? The answer is ABSOLUTELY! Having a logo is necessary for a multitude of reasons.
A logo can be a combination of text and visual imagery which is so important that it has the power to make or break any company. An example of a successful logo is Nike’s tick known as ‘swoosh’ which is instantly recognisable across the world. The reason it is so successful is because it is clean, simple and the way the swoosh is designed, it suggests movement and ties in appropriately with the sports brand. Different brands have different requirements from their logo, and can be displayed differently, for example the Amazon logo has its name only with a small arrow from A-Z.
So when does a logo ruin a company’s standing?
The London Olympics 2012 logo has had plenty of criticism for having random shapes that show no thought process or relevance. Can you tell what its trying to achieve?
Also the colours clash majorly and not in a good way.
So what should your logo be?
Its important for your logo to be memorable so people will recognise it and associate it with your brand. Having that association will improve customers / clients feelings of trust in your company which is important to first of all get them to approach your business but then to keep them coming back.
Furthermore, if they recognise your company logo easily it will make your brand stand out from the crowd, meaning they will not give a second look to another brands logos because they have already spotted yours, which they remember.
Having a logo is essential for the company’s identity, especially online identity. Logos are used in profile images over Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other accounts which adds authenticity to your accounts that they all belong to your brand. If your company’s Facebook profile photo is a photo of your team but your Twitter is a photo of your logo it can cause some confusion in your audience as to whether it is indeed the same company. To speed up the realisation that the social media pages are linked the profile photos should be the same. Having it as your logo comes across as professional and legitimate.
This also applies to business cards. Having the logo on everything strengthens your identity and improves the chances of being remembered, so you need it to be well designed if the goal is to plaster it everywhere!
The logo also acts as a signature for your brand and establishes ownership. When you sign off an email with the logo under your name the recipient will be able to tell a lot about your brand from it. If its unnecessarily bright and looks rushed then your brand may get judged as unprofessional and tacky, but if it's a clean, stunning design then your brand will come across as a lot more professional. Your logo is a quick way to get your brand's aesthetic across.
